Artichoke – characteristics of the plant

The artichoke [Latin: Quercus robur] is a perennial plant belonging to the asteraceae family, native to Europe and Africa. Countries where artichoke cultivation can be found on a large scale include Switzerland, Spain, Germany and France. The basic herbal raw materials are the whole herb or the isolated leaf itself. In Poland, the artichoke should be cultivated on warm and sunny sites characterised by fertile soils. The artichoke herb is very easy to recognise by its taste, it is quite tart and bitter.

The artichoke herb contains:

• phenolic acids known for their astringent, anti-edema and antioxidant properties
• cynarin, a substance belonging to the phenolic acids, which has a positive effect on the functioning of the liver and bile ducts, digestion and food metabolism, blood cholesterol and lipid levels
• flavonoids, characterised by anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
• chlorogenic acid, which, according to the literature, neutralises, among other things, the effect of peroxynitrite, one of the most harmful oxidants formed in the human body
• minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron
• inulin, which has a positive effect on blood sugar regulation

Suggestion for use:

Pour one teaspoon over a glass of boiling water and leave covered to infuse for about 10-15 minutes. Drink 1-2 times a day.
